Just remembering last winter… when it was cold and the dogs needed their sweaters. Certainly not the case now!

Life Lessons Learned from HBO’s True Blood: Pam De Beaufort
Who exactly is Pam De Beaufort you may ask? First, I must assume that you, as the reader, watch HBO’s “True Blood,”and therefore agree that Pam is a sarcastic, self-centered, and self-proclaimed bitch. For those who cannot quickly recall, Pamis Eric’s second in command and leading lady of Fangtasia, Shreveport’s infamous vampire club. Being an avid “True Blood”fan, I’ve often determined Pam to be simply a secondary character, but as of recently, I can state with certitude that Pam has developed into one of my favorite characters.
It’s the way in which she unapologetically speaks her mind that appeals to me. She’s selfish and unpleasant, but embraces it so well that I find myself envious of her strength. Her demeanor never falters and she is completely unashamed of who she offends or challenges. Her beauty and confidence amalgamated with an edgy attitude work in her favor, as she nearly always gets what she wants. Despite the tough exterior, an underlying generosity is exposed every so often; moments that are short-lived and never mistaken for vulnerability.
In comparison, I have always been the nice person, the easy-going one, and a typical people-pleaser. The older I get, the more I realize that being nice has had noticeable disadvantages. Simply speaking up to defend myself results in a condescending pat on the head, as if my anger is childish and comical. When I express sarcasm and bitchiness, it appears to be so out of character, that others simply wonder if I’m having a bad day. In the end, my nicety often leads to an appearance of weakness, a lack of respect, and ultimately a loss of opportunities.
Although Pam is nothing more than a TV character, she represents real-life “characters” I’ve known and observed in my lifetime. I secretly admire people like her who are comfortable in their own bitchy skin; she’s not nice, and she couldn’t care less. It’s people like this that have me convinced that nice people do in-fact finish last. Unfortunately, I’ve also come to the conclusion that it would be too far out of my character to drastically change into a Pam. I am type-casted to be the way I am for some purpose…I’m sure. And while I will make small attempts at sticking up for myself along the way, I’ll just have to resolve at admiring the Pam De Beaufort’s of the world from afar.
